Welcome Back

Nau Mai, Haere Mai

We would like to welcome all of our students back to school for the beginning of Term 2 and especially our new students and whaanau who were welcomed by Maangere Bridge School students, teachers during the Poowhiri. It was a pleasure to also have one of our ex-students Josiah Lea’aetalafo’ou who responded on behalf of the manuhiri with such pride, confidence and mana. Our two new teachers who are starting this term are Gharpreet Shergill in Room 12 and Nelmari Balsdon will be teaching in Room 14 starting in Week 5.

New Students starting Term 2

Welcome to all of our new students: Oka Evalu, Semisi Fifita, Zhiraydon Richards, Rylee King, Jakob Kurta, Mason Levy, Oliver Miller, Fredrick, Tevita and Luisa Tovi, Melizza Yosalina, Johnathan Lea’aetalafo’ou and Umair Dean.

Teacher Ony Day

The Kahui Ako- ‘Te Iti Kahurangi Kāhui Ako’ team organised and planned the Teacher Only Day held last Monday 24th April where all staff from the Kahui schools came together for Professional development to learn and improve our understanding of the changes in the new curriculum refresh ‘Te Mātaiaho’. Waterlea Primary school hosted the event and it was a great opportunity for staff to attend a range of workshops and presentations that focussed on unpacking:
* “Why” the New Zealand Curriculum is being refreshed
* Te Mātaiaho: Whakapapa and “What” it means for us as educators
* Suggested next steps for schools
The focus also aligns with ‘Te Iti Kahurangi Kāhui Ako’ Strategic goals.
It was lovely to have Te Rito whaanau from Te Papapa School open the day as part of Poowhiri.
Our staff shared lots of good feedback from the day and look forward to the journey ahead for our school in terms of the ‘Curriculum Refresh’ – ‘Refreshing the New Zealand Curriculum’.

Student Inquiry Learning

Term 2 – ‘Science’

This term our Student Inquiry is all about the concept ‘Growing’ and our Curriculum area focus is ‘Science’. Our teachers will be focussing on our students growing their knowledge and understanding as young scientists through the different strands in the Curriculum. We are delighted to have the ‘Science in the Van show’ return to our school and this will be held on Friday 26th May where our students will experience science in a fun and innovative way.

Talanoa Evenings

Parent Partnership Meetings

We will be having two talanoa evenings for all whaanau to attend. The purpose for the Talanoa Evenings is for our parents/caregivers to participate in a ‘Talanoa’ of their child’s learning progress and next steps. A booking schedule will be sent out for you to make an appointment either on Tuesday 20th June or Thursday 22nd June. The school will finish at 1 pm and the Talanoa evenings will start at 1.30 pm and finish at 7 pm. We will provide more information for all whaanau before that time.

Winter Weather

Winter Weather
As we head into winter weather we would like to remind all of our students to wear their school jackets to school. At the end of last term we had a lot of school uniforms in the ‘lost and found’ property. You can see the office if your child has lost their jacket and other overall school uniform enquiries.  Please remember to label all school uniforms.

Term 2 Staff Updates

This term Whaea Dale is on ‘refreshment leave’ and we look forward to her returning at the beginning of Term 3. Mrs Waitangi Tofilau has stepped into the role of Acting Deputy Principal for Term 2 while Whaea Dale is on leave. Initially Mrs Tofilau will be teaching in Room 14 together with Whaea Karina until the new classroom teacher starts in Week 5.  Mrs Tofilau’s tamariki have found new homes with the teachers in Tuii for the rest of the year.
