Term 1 Student Inquiry ‘Ko Wai ahau?’
It has been a long 11 week term and our tamariki and teachers have worked very hard throughout the term. Our students were able to share their student inquiry learning about our Theme ‘Ko wai ahau? Who am I? on the last week and it was great to have parents and whaanau come to see your child’s learning journey. The last 5 weeks of this term have also included our students taking part in Whole School Kapahaka with Matua Jono and Whaea Mereana which has been a great opportunity for all students to learn waiata and other skills. The Swimming Spash event was also a highlight and it is great to have our community supporting our upcoming fundraising events that will help go towards the refurbishment of our swimming pool. We have a Swimming committee with representatives from the Board who will also be looking at other ways to fund the maintenance of our school swimming pool. We would like to say thank you to our caretaker Bo who started this year and is doing a great job by keeping our school grounds tidy and clean as part of our MBS Values ‘Kaitiakitanga’.
Te Ara Huarau – New Approach to evaluation
ERO (Education Review Office)
Te Ara Huarau ‘A new Approach to evaluation ‘ Education Review Office (ERO) visited our school in Term 1. There were two ERO Teams that included Te Pou Reo Review in Te Hiaroa where our parents/whaanau, kaiako/teachers, senior leadership and representatives of our School Board had the opportunity to share and respond to paatai/questions from the team. During their visit we received feedback which was positive according to their findings and through discussions. We look forward to the draft ERO report which will be shared with the Board before it is finalised. The report will identify the school’s strengths and also recommendations according to their findings and evidence gathered for ongoing school improvement.
Attendance ‘Everyday matters’
Attendance this term has improved and we continue to reinforce that ‘Everyday matters’ where every child attends school regularly in order to support with their learning progress. Can you please continue to contact the school office if your child is away sick or for other reasons so we can record the appropriate attendance code.

Attendance
‘Everyday Matters’
|
The attendance at MBS is recorded and provided to the Ministry of Education as part of producing a report for all schools. The report will show the average attendance for each week of the term and the breakdown of attendance within the demographic makeup of the school.
We have received our provisional report and the data has highlighted that we have 62% of students attending school regularly which is an improvement in comparison to Term 1 in 2024 with only 55% of students attending school regularly (less than 5 days absent in the term)
One of our strategic goals is Attendance and it aligns with ‘Angitu’ ‘Together we succeed’. The target for 2025 is for 90% of our students to be attending school regularly.
A huge congratulations to Room 5 who have reached this target for Term 1. They received ‘Koropuku’ who has taken over Trackers role and is given out to the class who has has the highest attedance rate throughout the term.
We understand that our students are away for different reasons which are explained and justified. We continue to work together in partnership with our parents and whaanau to provide support where needed for our students to be at school regularly because ‘Every day matters!’ Ngaa mihi nui

We’ve had another busy and wonderful term in the library. Highlights have included celebrations for Neurodiversity week, Purple Day and a visit from Koropuku. Whaea Rose also attended a very exciting workshop run by the Lego Foundation – more on that below!
We’ve read SO many books Whaea Rose has had to go out to the National Library to borrow extras! We’ve also added over 100 beautiful new books to our collection. A few have been so popular we had to have a draw to choose the first lucky readers!
Remember to keep reading over the holidays! There will be prizes for tamariki who share their favourite holiday book with Whaea Rose after the break. The local library is always a great option. Kia pai tāu pānui!

Ruma Tekau maa Tahi – Room 11

Room 11 has had a wonderful time over the past 5 weeks engaging in learning and participating in all school activities. We’ve explored all about Ko wai ahau? in different areas of our lives. This was in terms of where we descend from to who we are in school and in the community as well. Students created and displayed different aspects of their lives. During Splash day, Room 11 enjoyed themselves with the rest of the school and had sausage sizzle as well.

This week, we have had a fantastic time in Room 12, filled with learning and excitement! We have been working hard on our reading and writing tasks, exploring new ideas online, and putting great effort into completing our inquiry projects. We are so excited to share our work with our parents next Wednesday! We have also been learning about famous people from Aotearoa New Zealand, which has been truly inspiring. It’s helping us reflect on their experiences and connect them to our own as we build a positive mindset. A special highlight of our week has been learning a Te Reo Māori song—we loved singing our waiata so much that we kept asking to sing it again! It has been a joy to see everyone so engaged and enthusiastic, and we look forward to another exciting week of learning together.

Ruma Tekau maa Toru – Room 13

Room 13 have had a blast over the past 5 weeks learning, celebrating and participating in all the awesome activities at MBS. We’ve learned all about Ko wai ahau in different areas of our lives from who we are as a person, where we descend from to who we are in school and in the community. We created different forms of art ranging from digital to collaborative and even displayed our pepehas through art using watercolours. We hosted an awesome assembly with our buddy class Maunga Pikitea, dancing, sharing our learning and practising our public speaking skills. Room 13 won best attendance and most on time for school and celebrated with a reward of ice-blocks and having Koropuku stay in our class for two weeks. We showed our support for those living with epilepsy by wearing purple and even Koropuku joined in. At swimming sports day our class shined with amazing swimmers averaging in the top 3 for freestyle and backstroke. We are super proud of Karlo, Ruby, Devine and Harper who also won the senior relay race. All and all it was an amazing first term of 2025 and we are looking forward to more exciting experiences and learning in Term 2! Have a wonderful holiday from room 13

Ruma Tekau maa Whaa – Room 14
|
As term one comes to an end we take a moment to reflect and celebrate the wonderful learning experiences we have had in Room 14, including the many opportunities for personal growth.
In the space of five weeks we have not only continued to develop our swimming skills (allowing us to participate in the MBS Splash Day) but we have also had five students who, for the first time in their life, can independently ride a bike! We are so proud of them and the courage they have shown in learning something new. Special thanks to Janet from Go Bike NZ and the team from TTT (Time to Thrive) Bike Hub for their skills and immense patience.
In class we have continued our math and literacy focus, weaving our inquiry throughout. Recently we have been learning about ANZAC Day and its importance to us as New Zealanders. We are looking forward to presenting our Ko Wai Ahau? Google slideshow presentations to our whānau at our upcoming student inquiry outcome afternoon.
To finish the term, Room 14 along with our buddy class Room 1 will be hosting the final school assembly of the term. We hope to see you there!
He waka eke noa! We are all in this together!

Ruma Tekau maa Rima – Room 15
|
Term 1 has been an incredible journey in Room 15! Our inquiry focus has been Ko wai ahau? (Who am I?), where we’ve been exploring the concept of identity and delving into the question of where we come from. Our tamariki have worked incredibly hard to research their whakapapa (family tree), culture, and what it means to be a rangatira (leader) at Mangere Bridge School. The outcome of this inquiry has been nothing short of amazing, with each student putting together individual boards that beautifully reflect their personal stories, traditions, and heritage. In addition to our inquiry work, we had an unforgettable Splash Day, where students competed in freestyle and backstroke events, representing our whānau team with energy and enthusiasm. This event brought us all together in the spirit of fun and friendly competition. Thank you to our parents for supporting our kura during this fun-filled event. We’ve also focused on building our literacy and numeracy skills, and it’s been wonderful to see the progress our tamariki have made. Their hard work and determination have been evident throughout the term. The past few weeks have been filled with growth, achievement, and lots of fun. We are incredibly proud of how hard our tamariki have worked, and we’re excited for what’s to come in the next term!

Ruma Tekau maa Ono – Room 16
|
As Term 1 comes to a close, we take this opportunity to reflect on ourselves, our achievements, and the goals we want to work towards in Term 2. This term has been filled with learning, growth, and exciting experiences that have helped us develop new skills and build confidence.
One of the highlights of our term was our weekly swimming sessions, where we focused on improving our water safety, stamina, and technique. It has been incredible to see everyone making progress and becoming more confident in the water. Another exciting experience was our time with Go Bike NZ, where tamariki learned the essentials of bike safety. Some students even had the chance to ride a bike for the first time, which was a fantastic milestone!
To conclude the term, we are eagerly preparing to present our inquiry projects, “Ko Wai Ahau?” to our families. This will be a special opportunity for us to demonstrate rangatiratanga (leadership) as we proudly showcase our learning and personal journeys. We can’t wait to share our hard work with you!
